7 Reasons Why Summer is a Good Time to Lose Weight

People often don’t think of summer is a great time to lose weight. After all, they’re having fun. Why worry about something that is often thought of as drudgery – as if it’s something you have to do?

I think it’s a great time and here are 7 reasons why.

You’re more active in the summer

It’s true. In the winter people tend to hibernate more – curling up under a blanket and watching Netflix.

Summer is a great time to lose weight because you’re out and about. Whether you’re at the beach and joining a game of beach volleyball or frisbee or walking in the park, or running and playing with the kids, you are burning calories.

Also because you are so active during the day, you probably get much better sleep at night and studies have shown that people who get 7-1/2 to 8 hours of sleep a night can reduce their weight just by getting more sleep, without any other major lifestyle changes.

Fresh local fruits and vegetables are in season

It’s a pleasure to eat well in the summer. London has so many farmer’s markets in the summer. It’s not just the big ones at Covent Garden Market and at the Western Fair Market. There are little ones that are all over the place.

For example yesterday morning we stopped at Joyce Farm Market a mile or so away from our house. We came home with raspberries, strawberries, new Yukon Gold potatoes, zucchini and cucumbers (and some freeze dried herbs that while may not be fresh are going to add a lot of flavour boost to my summer cooking). And they are way fresher and less expensive than buying them in the winter.

Summer is a great time for abundant, healthy food.

You drink more water in the summertime

It’s hot, you sweat and what do you do? You reach for water. Everyone drinks more water in the summertime. Water is a zero calorie drink that keeps you feeling fuller longer reducing the need to reach for a snack. And it helps your body metabolize the food you eat.

You feel happier in the sunshine

Sunlight helps increase serotonin levels which makes you feel better. Many people reach for comfort food when they are feeling down.

You barbecue more

Winter cooking often means heavier foods, with more sauces and added fat. Firing up the barbie means that you can cook leaner meats, poultry and fish with less heavy sauce and oil.

You may eat less in hot weather

Your body wants to keep cool and digestion along with other body processes creates heat in the body. So to keep cool, your body may suppress your appetite to help keep you cooler.

You can be in great shape for the winter holiday season and not have the New Year’s day food guilt

If you lose weight over the summer when November and December holiday seasons roll around, you’re already in great shape. You’ll also be motivated to be a bit more moderate in your choices at holiday get-togethers because you don’t want to undo all the great work you did over the summer. On the other hand, you may also feel better about indulging a little more because you are in such great shape.
