One size may “fit all” when it comes to buying pantyhose, but it certainly doesn’t apply when it comes to losing weight.
It’s true. Everyone has different needs and different lifestyles.
Some people may:
- like sugar, but it doesn’t like them
- enjoy their carbs a little too much
- prefer a structured diet where they count every morsel they consume
- not like weighing and measuring every scintilla of food they eat
The one thing that all dieters have in common is willpower and how quickly it can fade.
Willpower lives in the conscious part of the mind which is temporary and only holds 7 to 9 pieces of information at any one time.
A dieter may state that they are going to lose weight and no matter what they are going to control what they eat. That’s the willpower.
Then something stressful comes along, and that willpower may be one of the 7 to 9 pieces of information that get pushed out.
And that’s where hypnosis comes in
Hypnosis is a state of focused attention where positive suggestions can be given to the subconscious to reframe associations around food and eating.
For example, someone who eats when things get stressful may have been comforted with food by an adult when they got hurt as a child.
Then there are members of the “clean plate club”. They were taught that they had to finish everything on their plate.
While in hypnosis, suggestions can be given to the adult’s subconscious that food doesn’t have to mean comfort. They don’t have to reach for the cookies when a stressful situation arises.
Suggestions can be given to the adult’s subconscious that leaving food on their plate isn’t a sin. To paraphrase Allan Sherman, the 1960s satirist said, “my mother told me to clean the plate because children were starving in Europe . . . they kept starving, and I got fat.”
